St
Brendan of Fenit
Naomh
Breandán Na Fianaite
Proposed Sculpture
Fenit
bay, the opening to the Atlantic beyond the Maharee Islands, gave Brendan
the dream of finding his place with God beyond the far horizon to the West
and North. Brendan founded and was associated with monasteries from
Ardfert to Clonfert on the Shannon and all along the west coasts of Ireland
and Scotland. The dream led him to Wales, to Brittany, to the Faeroes, to Iceland and probably
to Newfoundland, and always back to the Shannon and Tralee Bay.
This is the
artist's, Tighe O'Donoghue, impression of a fitting mounument to Brendan.
This statue will be placed, looking out to sea, on the
summit of Samphire Island, where it will speak of the dream that led Brendan,
and many other local people, to find God and new lands where none had gone
before.
The sculpture, in bronze, with plinth, will be 16.5 feet high, situated on the top of Samphire rock
at the entrance of Fenit harbour and will be visible from Tralee to Mount
Brandon. We know it will be an internationally acclaimed sculpture and a fitting
tribute and that it will blend in and enhance the 10 to 12 mountains of
over 2,000 feet in the vicinity.
The location
is appropriate with Brendan present in the place where he and his dream was born,
with the ever-present sea in all its moods and winds from gentle breeze
to violent storm, reminding us that one life lived gloriously can inspire
us all who are buffeted by life's stormy seas.
